We need to see more recipes with hemp hearts!
If you're not familiar with hemp hearts, they are the soft, white, inner core of the hemp seed. Hemp seed comes from the low THC variety of Cannabis sativa. Don't worry, it won't get you high and is perfectly safe to eat. If you have any concerns check out this blog - Is hemp seed safe to eat? 3 myths busted!
Hemp hearts are still relatively new to the Australian pantry, that they don't often feature in recipes and many people aren't quite sure how to use them. But trust me, we need to see more recipes with hemp hearts! Why? They are so darn healthy!
Hemp hearts contain every essential amino acid our body needs to function. They are also rich in essential fatty acids, including omega 3, 6 and 9. Did you know that every cell in our body contains lipids (fatty acids)? This means they are absolutely vital for our body to function properly, so make sure you are eating the right fats for optimum health.
Buy Australian hemp hearts
Please be careful in selecting your hemp hearts as many are imported. Read the back of the packet (look for the bar chart next to the kangaroo icon) and make sure you are purchasing 100% Australian hemp hearts to ensure you are supporting the Australian hemp industry. They will be a little more expensive, but at least you know those extra few dollars are staying in Australia and supporting Australian farmers.
A dairy free porridge recipe
Your traditional porridge recipe uses milk, however dairy free recipes are becoming more and more popular because, for many people, their tolerance to dairy seems to be decreasing. For 70% of us, our bodies are genetically programmed to reduce our tolerance to lactose with age. Whilst milk is still a great source of nutrients, if you can't tolerate it like you used to, there are now plenty of plant-based alternatives available. In this recipe I use almond milk. But you could also use hemp milk!
